Product Management Root Cause Analysis Question: Investigating mobile banking app user decline

Introduction

NatWest's mobile banking app has experienced a 15% drop in daily active users over the past month, signaling a significant issue that requires immediate attention. To address this problem, I'll employ a systematic approach to identify, validate, and resolve the root cause while considering both short-term fixes and long-term strategic implications.

Framework overview

This analysis follows a structured approach covering issue identification, hypothesis generation, validation, and solution development.

Step 1

Clarifying Questions (3 minutes)

  • Looking at the timing, I'm thinking there might be a recent app update. Has there been any significant changes or updates to the app in the last 1-2 months?

Why it matters: Recent changes could directly impact user experience and engagement. Expected answer: Yes, there was a major update 6 weeks ago. Impact on approach: If confirmed, we'd focus on analyzing the changes in that update.

  • Considering user segments, I'm curious about the distribution of the drop. Is the 15% decrease uniform across all user segments, or are certain groups more affected?

Why it matters: This helps identify if the issue is widespread or specific to certain user types. Expected answer: The drop is more pronounced among users aged 45+. Impact on approach: We'd investigate features or changes that might particularly affect older users.

  • Thinking about external factors, have there been any significant changes in the competitive landscape recently?

Why it matters: Competitor actions could be drawing users away from NatWest's app. Expected answer: No major changes from direct competitors. Impact on approach: We'd focus more on internal factors if external competition isn't a significant factor.

  • Considering technical aspects, has there been any change in how daily active users are measured or tracked in the past month?

Why it matters: Ensures we're comparing apples to apples in our metrics. Expected answer: No changes in measurement methodology. Impact on approach: Confirms the issue is real and not a data anomaly, focusing our efforts on actual usage patterns.
