How to answer a product improvement interview question

A strong answer makes a sequence of choices. Clarify the outcome, focus on one user, find a specific problem, compare solutions, and define how you would test the result. The six steps below keep that reasoning clear.

  1. 1. Clarify the goal and constraints

    Restate the product and ask which outcome matters. Confirm the market, platform, time horizon, and any constraints before suggesting features.

  2. 2. Choose one user segment

    Name the users you could serve, then select one segment. Explain why its need is important enough to solve first.

  3. 3. Find the most important pain point

    Walk through that user's journey and identify where it breaks down. Label assumptions that would need research or product data to confirm.

  4. 4. Prioritize the problem

    Compare pain points by frequency, severity, strategic fit, and confidence. Pick one and state the trade-off you are making.

  5. 5. Compare solutions and choose

    Generate more than one solution. Compare user value, effort, risk, and fit, then choose the smallest useful version to test.

  6. 6. Define success and guardrails

    Select one primary outcome metric, supporting measures, and guardrails. End with the experiment or release that would validate the idea.

A practical 30-minute structure

One useful practice split is 3 minutes to clarify, 5 to choose a user, 5 to map pain points, 5 to prioritize, 7 to compare solutions, and 5 to define metrics and a test. Adjust the timing to the interviewer's prompts.

Worked mini-example: improve Gmail

In an independent practice case, you might focus on occasional project contributors who struggle to recover context from old threads and attachments. The goal is to reduce time spent rebuilding that context. After comparing a better search flow with a project view, you could test a lightweight project view that groups related messages and files. Measure time to find the needed context, with search satisfaction and accidental sharing as guardrails.

  • Listing features before agreeing on the goal or user.
  • Trying to solve every user's problem in one answer.
  • Choosing an idea without explaining priorities and trade-offs.
  • Using generic metrics that do not measure the stated goal.
  • Presenting assumptions as known user research or company facts.
