Product Management Product Design Question: AJIO Business ordering for small-town boutique owners

Introduction

AJIO Business is Reliance Retail's B2B wholesale app for fashion. It lets small retailers, boutique owners and online resellers buy branded and private-label apparel in bulk from thousands of brands at wholesale prices, and have it shipped to their shop. For a boutique owner in a town like Nashik or Siliguri, the alternative is a trip to a wholesale market in Surat, Delhi's Gandhi Nagar or Mumbai, cash payment, and guesswork about what will sell.

The question asks us to design an ordering experience on AJIO Business for small-town boutique owners restocking seasonal inventory, for example before Diwali or the wedding season. This is a B2B design problem with a consumer-style buyer, so the answer must balance simplicity with the realities of working capital, credit and inventory risk.

Tip

In B2B design questions, interviewers want to see that you understand the buyer's business model. Talk about margin, sell-through and cash flow, not only screens.

Step 1

Clarify Questions (3 minutes)

  • Who exactly is the user: the shop owner, a staff member, or a reseller who sells online?

  • Why it matters: The owner decides on assortment and money; staff often only place orders.
  • Hypothetical answer: Owners of single-store boutiques with annual sales of ₹20 lakh to ₹2 crore.
  • Impact: We design for a busy owner who decides alone, often on a phone in the shop.
  • What is the business goal: more first orders, larger orders, or more frequent repeat orders?

  • Hypothetical answer: Increase repeat seasonal orders from existing retailers, the main lever for GMV and retention.
  • Impact: The design focuses on the restocking journey, not acquisition.
  • Do we offer credit or only prepaid and COD?

  • Why it matters: Working capital is the biggest constraint for small retailers before a festive season.
  • Hypothetical answer: Prepaid, COD for some categories, and a pilot with lending partners for short-term credit.
  • Impact: Financing can be part of the solution.
  • What data do we have on what sells in the retailer's area?

  • Hypothetical answer: AJIO Business order data and aggregated, anonymised sell-through signals from AJIO consumer orders and Reliance stores by pincode.
  • Impact: We can recommend assortment, a real differentiator.

Propose the Goal

Help boutique owners restock the right assortment for the season with confidence and less cash risk, so they place larger and more frequent orders on AJIO Business.

Define the Scope

Android app, women's ethnic wear and festive menswear, the 6–8 weeks before major festivals.
