Introduction
Digit Insurance sells international travel insurance online with simple plans and digital claims. One fast-growing group of travellers is Indian students going abroad to study. Many universities require proof of health cover, students are often travelling alone for the first time, and parents in India want peace of mind. This question asks me to design a Digit travel insurance experience for these students. I'll clarify the problem, explain why it matters, segment users, map pain points, design a solution and set metrics.
When a product has a buyer and a user who are different people, as with parents paying for a student's cover, say so early. It changes every design choice.
Step 1
Clarify Questions (3 minutes)
- Is this a new product or a new experience on an existing one? Assume a new student-focused experience built on Digit's overseas travel product, with product features filed with IRDAI where needed.
- Which destinations? Focus on the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Germany, the largest study destinations for Indian students.
- Who buys? Usually parents pay; students use the cover abroad.
- Goal? Grow Digit's share of student travel cover with high satisfaction and sound loss ratios.
- Constraints? Some universities require their own insurance plan or a waiver that meets specific benefit levels; Digit must meet those rules or the policy is useless.
Propose the Goal
Make Digit the easiest way for Indian students to get cover their university accepts, and make it easy to get care and claim money while abroad.
Define the Scope
In scope: plan selection, university waiver support, purchase by parents, cover use abroad, claims. Out of scope: education loans, forex cards and visa services, which could be partnerships later.
