How would you design a first-credit-card experience on HDFC Bank's PayZapp Pixel card for fresh graduates?

Product Management Product Design Question: HDFC Bank PayZapp Pixel first credit card for graduates

Introduction

HDFC Bank's PayZapp Pixel card is a digital-first credit card that lives inside the PayZapp app: instant virtual issuance, merchant-of-choice cashback, EMI conversion and card controls, all without a plastic-first journey. The prompt asks us to design a first-credit-card experience on Pixel for fresh college graduates, people who just received their first salary credit and have never held credit before. This is a classic product design question with a regulated-finance twist: we must make credit approachable for a new-to-credit (NTC) user while keeping HDFC Bank's risk, RBI compliance and collections exposure in check. I'll clarify the problem, explain why it is worth building, pick a segment, map pain points, propose solutions, and close with metrics.

Tip

Before diving in, confirm the framing with the interviewer: "I'll treat this as designing the end-to-end first-card journey inside PayZapp, from discovery to the first three billing cycles. Does that work?"

Step 1

Clarify Questions (3 minutes)

  • Who exactly is the "fresh graduate" in scope? Salaried first-jobbers, or also students and gig workers?

  • Why it matters: Underwriting inputs differ sharply. A salaried user has a payslip and a salary account; a student has neither.
  • Hypothetical answer: Salaried graduates aged 21–25 in their first 18 months of work, ideally with an HDFC Bank salary account from campus or corporate payroll tie-ups.
  • Impact: We can lean on salary-account cash-flow data for underwriting instead of a bureau score that does not exist yet.
  • Is the goal acquisition, activation, or long-term relationship value?

  • Why it matters: A design for maximum issuance looks very different from one built for healthy first-year usage.
  • Hypothetical answer: Primary goal is a healthy, active first card that graduates keep using and later upgrade from (for example to Millennia or Regalia Gold).
  • Impact: We optimise for activation and responsible usage, not raw approvals.
  • Are there constraints on credit limits or features for NTC customers?

  • Why it matters: Risk teams will cap limits and may restrict cash withdrawal or EMI for thin-file users.
  • Hypothetical answer: Starting limits of ₹25,000–₹75,000, with limit increases allowed after six on-time cycles.
  • Impact: The design must make a small limit feel useful and show a visible path to growth.

Propose the Goal

Help salaried graduates get, understand and responsibly use their first credit card on PayZapp Pixel, so that by month six they have an active card, a clean repayment record and a growing CIBIL history with HDFC Bank as their primary lender.

Define the Scope

In scope: discovery, application, underwriting UX, first purchase, the first statement, repayment and the first limit increase. Out of scope: card rewards economics, offline merchant acquiring and collections operations. PayZapp is the primary surface; the bank app is a discovery channel.

Tip

Pause and summarise the goal in one sentence. Interviewers at banks look for candidates who name the risk constraint upfront rather than discovering it at the solution stage.
