Product Management Product Success Metrics Question: measuring the Mercado Pago credit card in Mexico

Introduction

Measuring the Mercado Pago credit card in Mexico is a harder question than it looks, because the card sits on top of three businesses at once: a lender that has to price risk for people with thin or no Buró de Crédito history, a payments product that competes with cash, OXXO deposits and SPEI transfers, and a retention engine for the MercadoLibre marketplace. I'll define what success means for cardholders, for MercadoLibre and for regulators, pick one North Star that balances usage with healthy credit, and then surround it with supporting, guardrail, trade-off and counter metrics.

Framework Overview

I'll cover product context, goals, a North Star Metric with its breakdown, supporting metrics, guardrails, trade-offs and counter metrics, then close with initiatives the metrics would point to.

Step 1

Product Context (3 minutes)

The Mercado Pago credit card in Mexico is a no-annual-fee Mastercard issued inside the Mercado Pago app, competing with Nu México, Stori and incumbent banks. Underwriting leans on MercadoLibre's own data (purchase history on the marketplace, wallet inflows, bill payments, seller sales) as well as Buró de Crédito and Círculo de Crédito, which lets it approve people that traditional banks such as BBVA México or Banorte would decline. Many customers start with a small limit and grow it by paying on time.

Why it matters now: MercadoLibre's credit portfolio nearly doubled to about $14.6B in Q1 2026, credit card TPV grew roughly 90% year over year, and the company issued around 2.7M cards in that quarter across the region. In June 2026 it said it intends to obtain a Mexican banking licence with the ambition of becoming the country's leading digital bank. Mexico revenue grew about 55% in Q2 2026. The card is the product that turns a Mercado Pago wallet user into a banking relationship.

Key stakeholders:

  • Cardholders: often first-time credit users, informal or mixed-income workers, young professionals who want meses sin intereses on the marketplace

  • MercadoLibre / Mercado Pago: wants profitable credit growth, higher marketplace frequency and a primary-account relationship

  • Merchants: online sellers on Mercado Libre and offline merchants accepting Mastercard and Point terminals

  • Regulators: CNBV, Banxico and CONDUSEF, especially once a banking licence is in play

Core user flow:

  1. Pre-approved offer appears in the Mercado Pago app (often after marketplace or wallet activity)
  2. Application with INE and CURP verification, credit bureau pull
  3. Digital card issued instantly; physical card shipped via Mercado Envíos
  4. First purchase, typically on Mercado Libre with meses sin intereses
  5. Usage off-platform: groceries, gas, subscriptions, Uber, Rappi
  6. Monthly statement, payment by SPEI, wallet balance, OXXO cash deposit or auto-debit
  7. Limit increases for good payers; collections for those who fall behind
