Product Management Product Design Question: SBI YONO Business mobile trade finance for MSME exporters

Introduction

In July 2026 SBI integrated its trade finance suite into YONO Business, so corporate and MSME users can view, track and authorise inland, import and export trade transactions on mobile. That is a big step for a bank whose trade customers have historically relied on branch visits, paper forms and the relationship manager's phone number. But "view and authorise" is not the same as a great experience. The prompt asks us to design a mobile trade finance experience on YONO Business for MSME exporters. I'll scope the problem, explain why it matters, segment users, map pain points across an export transaction, prioritise them, propose a solution and define success.

Tip

B2B design questions are about roles and workflows, not single users. Name the maker, checker and approver early, and remember that the person who pays the price of a delay (the promoter) is often not the person using the app (the accounts executive).

Step 1

Clarify Questions (3 minutes)

  • Which exporters are we designing for?

  • Why it matters: A ₹5 crore textile exporter in Tiruppur and a ₹500 crore engineering firm in Pune have very different operations.
  • Hypothetical answer: MSME exporters with annual exports of ₹5–100 crore who bank with SBI for packing credit and export bill collection.
  • Impact: Small teams, a promoter who approves everything, and an external CA or freight forwarder in the loop.
  • Which trade products are in scope?

  • Hypothetical answer: Export bills (collection and discounting), packing credit (pre-shipment finance) and inward remittance realisation, plus the related forex conversion.
  • Impact: The design centres on the export cycle from order to realisation.
  • Is the goal adoption, speed or revenue?

  • Hypothetical answer: Reduce turnaround time from shipment to funds in the account, and move more trade transactions to digital channels.
  • Constraints?

  • Hypothetical answer: FEMA and RBI documentation rules, EDPMS (export data processing and monitoring system) reconciliation, physical documents for some letters of credit, and maker-checker controls.

Propose the Goal

Help MSME exporters get from shipment to cash faster, with full visibility, by letting them initiate, track and close export transactions on YONO Business without visiting a branch.

Define the Scope

  • In scope: Export bill submission, discounting requests, packing credit drawdown, status tracking, forex booking for realisation, document uploads and approvals.
  • Out of scope: Import letters of credit, bank guarantees, and back-office trade processing systems.
