Product Management Product Design Question: first-month experience for first-time Ather EL scooter owners

Introduction

Ather Energy built its brand with the 450 series and widened it with the Rizta. Its next step is the EL platform, a new, lower-cost scooter architecture unveiled at Community Day 2025, with the first EL-based scooter planned for a 2026 launch. EL scooters are meant to take Ather into the mass market: buyers in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, many of them moving from a petrol Activa or Jupiter, many buying their first electric vehicle.

The prompt: design the first 30 days of ownership for first-time EV owners buying an EL-platform Ather scooter. The core of the question is anxiety. A first-time EV owner worries about range, charging, battery life and service in a town where they may never have seen an Ather. I'll clarify, justify, segment, map pain points, design solutions and define metrics.

Tip

Anchor the design on a moment in time. "The first 30 days" makes scope concrete and lets you design a journey rather than a feature list.

Step 1

Clarify Questions (3 minutes)

  • Who is the buyer: a first-time two-wheeler owner or a petrol scooter upgrader?

  • Hypothetical answer: Mostly petrol-scooter upgraders aged 25–45 in tier-2 cities, often the family's primary rider.
  • Impact: They know how to ride; what they don't know is how to live with an EV.
  • How do they charge?

  • Hypothetical answer: Most charge at home with the portable charger; Ather Grid coverage is thinner in smaller cities.
  • Impact: Home charging habits and range confidence matter more than fast-charging features.
  • What channels touch the buyer in the first 30 days?

  • Hypothetical answer: Experience centre at delivery, the Ather app, the scooter dashboard, WhatsApp and the service centre.
  • Impact: The design spans offline and digital touchpoints.
  • What does the business want from this?

  • Hypothetical answer: Fewer early-life complaints and service visits, higher app activation, and more referrals in new cities where word of mouth decides adoption.

Propose the Goal

Turn first-time EV anxiety into confidence within 30 days, measured by app activation, early complaint rate and referral intent.

Define the Scope

In scope: delivery handover, app onboarding, dashboard tips, charging guidance, first service touchpoint and community. Out of scope: pricing, financing and dealer incentives.
