Product Management Product Success Metrics Question: measuring Harvey Knowledge legal research

Introduction

Harvey Knowledge is the part of Harvey that answers legal, regulatory and tax research questions using authoritative sources. Lawyers ask a question such as "What is the standard for piercing the corporate veil in Delaware?" and Harvey returns an answer with citations to cases, statutes and secondary sources. Harvey has strengthened its research capability through a strategic alliance with LexisNexis, which brings primary law content and citation tools into Harvey, and through additional content sources across jurisdictions.

Legal research is a high-stakes use case. Lawyers have been sanctioned by courts for citing cases that AI invented. So success for Knowledge is not just usage; it is usage that lawyers can rely on. The prompt: "How would you measure the success of Harvey Knowledge?"

Framework Overview

I'll set the context, define goals, choose and break down a North Star metric, then cover supporting, guardrail, trade-off and counter metrics and initiatives.

Step 1

Product Context (3 minutes)

Key stakeholders:

  • Lawyers doing research (associates, in-house counsel, tax professionals): want accurate, fast, cited answers.
  • Partners and general counsels: want research they can trust in front of clients and courts.
  • Content partners such as LexisNexis: want their content used and valued.
  • Harvey: wants Knowledge to be a daily habit that justifies premium pricing.

User flow:

  1. Lawyer asks a research question in Harvey, choosing jurisdiction and sources.
  2. Harvey searches authoritative content and drafts an answer with citations.
  3. Lawyer reviews the answer and opens key sources.
  4. Lawyer saves the research, uses it in a memo, or asks follow-up questions.

Product lifecycle stage: Growth. Research is a core use case, and partnerships with content providers are deepening coverage.

Competitive context: Thomson Reuters (Westlaw and CoCounsel), LexisNexis's own Lexis+ AI, vLex (Vincent), and general AI tools that lawyers should not rely on for citations. Harvey differentiates by combining research with drafting, workflows and Vault in one platform.
