Product Management Improvement Question: responsible use of Nubank Pix no Crédito installments

Introduction

Pix transformed payments in Brazil: instant, free, available 24/7 and used by most adults. Nubank added a twist with Pix no Crédito, which lets customers make a Pix payment using their credit card limit and split it into up to 12 monthly installments, with interest. Combined with Nubank's tap-to-pay Pix, it turned the credit card limit into something that can pay almost anyone, from a landlord to a mechanic to a friend.

That flexibility is powerful but risky. Installments at interest, layered on top of the card's normal spending, can quietly build debt that customers did not plan for. The question is how to improve Pix no Crédito so customers use installments responsibly, which protects them and reduces Nubank's credit losses over time.

Tip

"Responsibly" needs a definition. Say clearly what good and bad usage look like before proposing features.

Clarifying Questions (5 mins)

  • Looking at the product context, how is Pix no Crédito priced today? I'll assume a monthly interest rate shown before confirmation, with the option to anticipate installments for a discount.

  • Considering user behaviour, who uses it most and for what? I'll assume many customers use it for bills (rent, utilities, boletos paid via Pix), emergencies and person-to-person payments, often near the end of the month.

  • On outcomes, what does "responsible" mean for this question? I'll define it as customers who take installments they can afford: total installment payments under a sensible share of income, low rollover into the card's revolving rate, and low delinquency.

  • On company alignment, is Nubank willing to trade some short-term revenue for healthier usage? I'll assume yes, because delinquency and churn cost more than the forgone interest.
