Product Management Product Design Question: Credit-building product for new-to-credit Tata Neu users

Introduction

Designing a credit-building product inside Tata Neu's finance section is a hard design question because it mixes user empathy, lending risk, regulation and ecosystem economics. Tata Neu already distributes personal loans from partner lenders, offers the Tata Neu HDFC Bank and Tata Neu SBI co-branded cards, and runs Tata Pay UPI. But a large share of Indians who shop on BigBasket or Croma have thin or no credit files, so they are rejected for the very cards and loans Tata Neu wants to distribute.

I'll clarify the problem, explain why the opportunity matters, pick a segment, map pain points, and then design and prioritise a solution, closing with metrics and risks.

Tip

For fintech design questions, name the regulator early. Interviewers want to see that you know Tata Digital is a distributor and that lending sits with RBI-regulated partners.

Step 1

Clarify Questions (3 minutes)

  • Who carries the credit risk: Tata Digital or partner lenders?

  • Why it matters: Tata Digital acts as a distribution platform; lenders such as Tata Capital and banks underwrite.
  • Hypothetical answer: Partner lenders and banks carry all risk. Tata Neu owns the experience and the data-sharing consent layer.
  • Impact: We design the journey and signals; the product must fit RBI digital lending guidelines.
  • What does success look like for the business in 12 months?

  • Why it matters: A credit-builder can optimise for card approvals, loan disbursals or long-term engagement.
  • Hypothetical answer: More new-to-credit users graduating to a co-branded card within 12 months.
  • Impact: The north star becomes graduation, not loan volume.
  • Which users are we talking about?

  • Why it matters: "New to credit" includes students, gig workers and first-job salaried users.
  • Hypothetical answer: Salaried first-jobbers and gig workers aged 21–30 in metros and Tier-2 cities who already transact on Tata Neu.
  • Impact: We can use their Tata ecosystem behaviour as a signal, with consent.

Propose the Goal

Help new-to-credit Tata Neu users build a credit history safely, so that within 12 months they qualify for a Tata Neu co-branded credit card, while keeping defaults within partner lenders' risk appetite.

Define the Scope

We'll design "Neu Credit Builder" inside the Tata Neu app: a secured, small-ticket credit product issued by a partner bank, with a guided progress experience and a graduation path to the Tata Neu HDFC Bank or SBI card. Mobile-first, Hindi and English at launch.

Tip

State the risk owner and the north star before you design anything. It keeps the rest of the answer coherent.
