Product Management Product Trade-Off Question: UBS app intraday versus end-of-day portfolio valuations

Introduction

Wealth management clients of UBS can check their portfolios in the UBS app and e-banking. A question product teams face: should the app show intraday portfolio values that move with live market prices, or keep end-of-day valuations? Intraday values feel modern and match what Yuh, Swissquote, Revolut and US brokers show. But UBS's wealth clients often hold discretionary mandates, funds, structured products and private market investments that don't price intraday, and constant price movement can trigger anxiety and calls to advisors. This trade-off tests whether a candidate can balance engagement, client outcomes, cost and accuracy.

Analysis Approach

I'll clarify, identify the trade-off type, understand the product, form a hypothesis, choose metrics, design an experiment, plan analysis, set decision rules and recommend next steps.

Step 1

Clarifying Questions (3 minutes)

  • Context: Which clients are we talking about?

Why it matters: Self-directed traders and discretionary mandate clients want different things. Expected answer: Swiss wealth management clients with both advisory and discretionary mandates. Impact on approach: We may need different defaults per mandate type.

  • Business Context: Why is this being raised now?

Expected answer: Client feedback says the app feels outdated compared with neobrokers; some advisors worry intraday values will increase panic calls. Impact on approach: We weigh perceived modernity against advisor workload and client behaviour.

  • User Impact: What share of assets are in instruments with reliable intraday prices?

Expected answer: Around 60% for a typical client; the rest are funds with daily NAVs, structured products and alternatives. Impact on approach: An "intraday" total could be misleading.

  • Technical: What is the cost of real-time market data and infrastructure?

Expected answer: Exchange data licences for display to many clients are significant, and peak-load infrastructure is needed.

  • Resource: Is this competing with other app priorities?

Expected answer: Yes, the same team owns post-migration improvements.
