Introduction
UBS key4 is the bank's fully digital product line in Switzerland: a private account, savings, a debit card, gold trading and, more recently, key4 business accounts, all opened and run from the "UBS & UBS key4" app. It was built to attract younger, digitally native Swiss clients who would otherwise default to Neon, Yuh, Revolut or PostFinance. The prompt asks us to design a first-investment experience inside key4 for young professionals who have never invested before. This is a strong design question for UBS because it sits where the bank's two worlds meet: a low-cost digital banking proposition and the investment expertise of the world's largest wealth manager.
I'll clarify the problem, explain why it matters now, choose a user segment, map pain points, generate and prioritise solutions, and finish with success metrics.
Before going deep, check with the interviewer: "Shall I treat this as a new feature inside the existing key4 app rather than a separate investing app?" It shows you are designing within UBS's real constraints.
Step 1
Clarify Questions (3 minutes)
- Why it matters: key4 clients are self-directed and price-sensitive; traditional retail clients have advisors and branch relationships.
- Hypothetical answer: key4 clients first, with the option to extend to the main app later.
- Impact: We design for a self-service, mobile-only journey with no advisor in the loop.
- Why it matters: Under the Swiss Financial Services Act (FinSA), execution-only and advisory services have different duties, including client segmentation and appropriateness checks.
- Hypothetical answer: We can offer execution-only and a simple digital mandate, with a short risk profile.
- Impact: The flow must include a light but compliant risk questionnaire and clear product information.
- Hypothetical answer: A small shelf of UBS ETFs and index funds, plus monthly savings plans from CHF 50.
- Impact: We favour simplicity and curated choice over a full brokerage shelf.
- Hypothetical answer: A meaningful share of active key4 clients holding at least one investment, with low complaint rates.
- Impact: Our metrics focus on first-investment conversion and persistence of savings plans.
Propose the Goal
Help young Swiss professionals make their first investment within the key4 app confidently, cheaply and in under ten minutes, and keep investing monthly, so that key4 becomes their primary money app and a feeder for UBS's broader wealth franchise.
Define the Scope
In scope: a mobile journey inside the key4 app covering education, risk profiling, product choice, savings-plan setup and the first 90 days after investing. Out of scope: crypto, single-stock trading, pillar 3a pensions (a natural follow-on) and advisor-led services.
Pause and summarise the goal in one sentence before moving on. Interviewers at UBS often probe whether you can keep regulatory constraints and user simplicity in the same frame.
