Product Management Product Strategy Question: ixigo hotels as a fourth growth engine

Introduction

ixigo (Le Travenues Technology) has built a profitable, listed travel business on three transport engines: trains (ixigo Trains and ConfirmTkt), flights, and buses (AbhiBus). In Q1 FY27, gross transaction value (GTV) grew 19% year on year to about ₹5,524 crore, and flights became the largest vertical by GTV. In Q2 FY27, GTV grew 22% to about ₹5,304 crore. Hotels are now reported as a separate segment: hotel GTV grew about 2.6 times to around ₹111 crore in Q2 FY27, including Brevistay, but still made up only about 2% of total GTV.

Analysts have started asking whether hotels can become ixigo's "fourth growth engine". The question has two parts: should they, and if so, what strategy? Key objectives:

  1. Grow revenue per traveller without hurting ixigo's profitability.
  2. Build a hotel offer that fits ixigo's users, not a copy of MakeMyTrip's.
  3. Use ixigo's transport data and AI capabilities as an advantage.

Step 1

Clarify the Strategic Goals (3-4 minutes)

  • What does "growth engine" mean in numbers?

  • Why it matters: Doubling a small base is easy; becoming material to the company is hard.
  • Expected answer: Hotels should reach 6–8% of GTV within three years and contribute meaningfully to revenue, given higher take rates than trains or flights.
  • Impact on approach: We need a plan for scale, not just growth rates.
  • How much is ixigo willing to spend?

  • Why it matters: Hotel growth often requires heavy marketing and discounts, which would hurt the profitability ixigo has protected since its IPO.
  • Expected answer: Investment is possible (the Prosus investment of about ₹1,296 crore in 2025 adds firepower), but growth should be capital-efficient.
  • Impact on approach: Favour cross-sell to existing users over paid acquisition.
  • Which hotel segments are in scope?

  • Why it matters: Luxury, mid-range, budget and hourly stays need different supply and marketing.
  • Expected answer: Focus on budget and mid-range, plus short stays through Brevistay.
  • Impact on approach: Supply strategy centres on Tier-2 cities and transit hubs.

Strategic assumptions:

  1. ixigo's advantage is its transport users and trip data, not hotel supply.
  2. Profitability is a constraint, not a nice-to-have.
  3. Hotels must serve ixigo's core users: value-conscious travellers in India's smaller cities and on trains and buses.
