Product Management Design Question: a dealer-backed instant offer flow for OLX Autos car sellers

Introduction

OLX Autos sits at the point where OLX's free classifieds meet CarTrade Tech's dealer and auction network. A private car owner in India today can either list on OLX and field dozens of calls from brokers and time-wasters, or sell to an instant-buy platform at a lower price. The prompt asks us to design a "sell your car" flow on OLX Autos that gets a private seller a firm, dealer-backed offer within 24 hours. This is a two-sided design problem: we must make sellers feel they got a fair price fast, while making dealers confident enough to bid sight-unseen. I'll clarify scope, explain why now, pick a segment, map pain points, propose solutions and define metrics.

Tip

Name the two sides early: "I'll treat the seller as the primary user and dealers as the supply of offers. Both must win or the flow fails."

Step 1

Clarify Questions (3 minutes)

  • Does OLX buy the car itself or only broker offers from dealers?

  • Why it matters: Inventory risk changes everything from pricing to working capital.
  • Hypothetical answer: OLX brokers offers from dealers in the CarTrade network and earns a fee from the winning dealer.
  • Impact: The design needs an auction or bidding mechanism, not an in-house pricing engine alone.
  • Which cars and cities are in scope?

  • Why it matters: Dealer density and car age drive offer quality.
  • Hypothetical answer: Cars up to 10 years old in the top 15 cities.
  • Impact: We can promise 24 hours only where at least 20 active dealers exist.
  • Is a physical inspection required?

  • Why it matters: Dealers rarely bid firmly without one.
  • Hypothetical answer: Yes, but it can be at home or at a partner location.
  • Impact: Inspection scheduling becomes a core part of the flow.
  • What does the business want most?

  • Hypothetical answer: Higher seller conversion to a completed sale, with healthy dealer fees.
  • Impact: North Star is completed transactions, not leads.

Propose the Goal

Let a private seller go from "I want to sell" to a firm, best-of-market offer in under 24 hours, and complete the sale within 72 hours, with no broker calls.

Define the Scope

In scope: seller app flow, inspection, dealer bidding, offer acceptance, paperwork guidance. Out of scope: financing the next car and dealer-side inventory tools.
