Product Management Design Question: a Safe Deal flow in OLX India chat for used smartphone buyers

Introduction

Used smartphones are one of the highest-volume categories on OLX India. Buyers chat with a stranger, agree a price, meet at a metro station or a café, hand over cash or a UPI transfer, and hope the phone is not stolen, locked to someone else's Google account, or swapped for a dud. Most of that journey happens outside the OLX app, which means OLX carries the trust risk without controlling the moments where trust is won or lost. The prompt asks us to design a "Safe Deal" experience inside OLX chat that makes buying a used phone feel safe from first message to handover. I'll clarify the problem, explain why it is worth building now, choose a user segment, map pain points, propose solutions, and close with success metrics.

Tip

Confirm the framing early: "I'll design the end-to-end buyer and seller flow for a used-phone deal, starting from the first chat message and ending after the handover. Does that scope work?"

Step 1

Clarify Questions (3 minutes)

  • Is this for the buyer, the seller, or both?

  • Why it matters: A marketplace feature that helps one side and burdens the other usually dies on the burdened side.
  • Hypothetical answer: Both, but the buyer is the primary user because buyers report most fraud.
  • Impact: Every seller-side step we add must be light and must pay off for the seller too, for example a faster sale.
  • Are we allowed to touch money, or must payment stay off-platform?

  • Why it matters: Holding funds raises regulatory, refund and dispute-handling questions.
  • Hypothetical answer: We can integrate a UPI payment with a partner, but OLX should not run a full escrow in version one.
  • Impact: Solutions lean on verification and guided meet-ups first, with payment as an optional layer.
  • Which cities and phone price bands matter most?

  • Why it matters: A ₹6,000 budget phone and an ₹80,000 iPhone carry very different risks.
  • Hypothetical answer: Metro and tier-2 cities, phones priced ₹10,000 to ₹60,000.
  • Impact: We can justify slightly heavier checks because the ticket size is meaningful.
  • What does success look like for the business?

  • Why it matters: OLX India earns mainly from paid seller products such as Featured ads and Boost to Top, not from transactions.
  • Hypothetical answer: More completed deals and fewer fraud complaints, which lift repeat use and paid seller adoption.
  • Impact: Our North Star should be completed safe deals, not app opens.

Propose the Goal

Increase the number of used-phone deals that complete without fraud or dispute, by bringing the riskiest moments of the deal (identity, device authenticity and payment) inside OLX chat.

Define the Scope

In scope: chat-based buyer and seller flows for the Mobiles category in India, device checks, meet-up guidance and an optional payment step. Out of scope: doorstep delivery, warranties and refurbishment, which belong to a different business model.

Tip

Pause and summarise the goal and scope before moving on. Interviewers reward candidates who make the problem smaller before making it bigger.
