Product Management Metrics Question: measuring Galaxy AI success on the Galaxy S26

Introduction

Galaxy AI is Samsung's umbrella brand for AI features across Galaxy phones, tablets, wearables and PCs: Live Translate, Interpreter, Circle to Search with Google, Photo Assist and generative edits, Note Assist, Writing Assist, Audio Eraser, Now Brief, and an upgraded Bixby. With the Galaxy S26 and One UI 8.5, Samsung added Perplexity as a second assistant alongside Google Gemini. The question is how to measure whether Galaxy AI on the Galaxy S26 series is succeeding. The challenge is that AI is now spread across dozens of features, so counting feature taps would mislead. I'll define success around repeated, valuable use and its effect on Galaxy's business.

Framework Overview

I'll cover product context, goals, a North Star Metric with its breakdown, supporting metrics, guardrails, trade-offs and counter metrics.

Step 1

Product Context

Galaxy AI blends on-device models (running on the Snapdragon/Exynos NPU) with cloud models from Samsung and partners, chiefly Google Gemini, plus Perplexity on the S26 series. Features fall into four families:

  • Communication: Live Translate for calls, Interpreter, Chat Assist, Writing Assist
  • Creativity: Photo Assist, Generative Edit, Audio Eraser, Instant Slow-mo
  • Productivity: Note Assist, Transcript Assist, Browsing Assist, Circle to Search
  • Proactive and agentic: Now Brief, Now Bar, Bixby, Gemini and Perplexity agents

Key stakeholders include:

  • Users: want AI that saves time and works reliably, ideally offline
  • Samsung MX (Mobile eXperience) business: wants AI to justify premium prices and upgrades
  • Partners (Google, Perplexity, Qualcomm): want usage and distribution
  • Regulators: watch privacy, data transfer and AI content labelling

User flow:

  1. Discover: setup tips, Now Brief suggestions, in-context prompts (e.g., a "translate" chip in a chat)
  2. Try: first use of a feature
  3. Repeat: the feature becomes part of a routine
  4. Trust: user lets AI act on their behalf (agentic tasks)

Product Lifecycle Stage: Growth. AI features are now standard across flagships and expanding down to Galaxy A-series devices.
