Product Management Design Question: first-week onboarding for Galaxy A-series first-time smartphone owners

Introduction

Samsung sells more Galaxy A and M series phones in India than any other line, and a growing share of those buyers are upgrading from a feature phone or picking up their very first smartphone. One UI ships with Easy Mode and a standard setup wizard, but neither was built for someone who has never used a touchscreen, does not have an email address, and may prefer Hindi, Tamil or Bengali over English. The task is to design a first-week experience that turns a nervous first-time owner into a confident, daily Galaxy user. I'll clarify the problem, explain why it matters for Samsung, segment users, pick the most painful problems, and then propose and measure a solution.

Tip

Before diving in, confirm with the interviewer that you are designing for the software experience on an existing Galaxy A-series device, not a new hardware product. It keeps the conversation focused on One UI, which is what most Samsung PM teams in India own.

Step 1

Clarify Questions (3 minutes)

  • Are we designing for India specifically, and for which price band?

  • Why it matters: A ₹9,000 Galaxy M buyer and a ₹30,000 Galaxy A buyer have very different digital literacy.
  • Hypothetical answer: India, Galaxy A0x/A1x and M-series phones priced ₹8,000–₹15,000.
  • Impact: We'll design for low storage, intermittent data and regional languages.
  • Is this a software change in One UI setup, a separate app, or an in-store service?

  • Why it matters: Each has a different owner, rollout path and cost.
  • Hypothetical answer: A One UI software experience, with optional hooks for retail staff.
  • Impact: The solution must ship as a system component and work offline.
  • What does success mean to the business: lower returns, more service adoption, or loyalty at the next upgrade?

  • Why it matters: It decides the north star of the design.
  • Hypothetical answer: Loyalty and Samsung account sign-up, with fewer service-centre visits as a secondary goal.
  • Impact: We'll measure retention and account linking, not just setup completion.

Propose the Goal

Help first-time smartphone owners in India complete their first five essential tasks (call, WhatsApp, camera, UPI payment, YouTube) within seven days of purchase, while building trust in the Galaxy brand so they buy Samsung again.

Define the Scope

In scope: setup wizard, first-week guidance, voice help in regional languages, a family-helper mode. Out of scope: hardware, carrier plans, financing and retail store redesign.

Tip

Stating out-of-scope items early shows the interviewer you can protect a team's focus, which Samsung interviewers frequently probe given how many teams touch a single phone.
