Product Management Design Question: SmartThings experience for remote family care of aging parents

Introduction

Millions of adult children live in a different city or country from their parents. In India, a software engineer in Bengaluru may have parents in Lucknow; in the US, a professional in Seattle may have a mother living alone in Ohio. SmartThings already connects Samsung TVs, refrigerators, washers, Galaxy phones and watches, and thousands of third-party sensors, yet it is mostly marketed as a home-automation tool for tech enthusiasts. The prompt asks me to design a SmartThings experience that helps families care for aging parents who live alone. I'll clarify scope, explain why Samsung should build this, segment users, prioritise pain points, and propose a solution with metrics.

Tip

Care products involve two users: the parent who lives with the devices and the adult child who pays for and monitors them. Say this out loud early; interviewers look for candidates who design for both sides without making the parent feel watched.

Step 1

Clarify Questions (3 minutes)

  • Which markets should we design for first?

  • Why it matters: Elder-care norms, device ownership and regulations differ sharply between India and the US.
  • Hypothetical answer: Launch in the US and India together, with India as a mobile-first design and US as a device-rich design.
  • Impact: The solution must work with just a Galaxy phone and a Samsung TV, scaling up when sensors are added.
  • Is this a medical product?

  • Why it matters: Medical claims trigger FDA or CDSCO regulation.
  • Hypothetical answer: No, it is a wellness and safety product; it can refer to medical services but not diagnose.
  • Impact: We'll avoid diagnostic claims and focus on routines, alerts and communication.
  • Are we expected to monetise this?

  • Why it matters: It decides whether we can include paid professional monitoring.
  • Hypothetical answer: A free core with an optional paid partner service.
  • Impact: Core features must work without subscription.

Propose the Goal

Give adult children peace of mind and give aging parents independence, by using devices already in the parent's home to detect unusual routines and make it effortless to connect when help is needed.

Define the Scope

In scope: SmartThings app experience for caregivers, a simplified experience on the parent's Galaxy phone, TV and watch, alerting and daily check-ins. Out of scope: building new hardware, clinical diagnosis, insurance products.
