Product Management Root Cause Analysis Question: Samsung TV Plus watch time decline in the US

Introduction

Samsung TV Plus is Samsung's free, ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) service, built into Samsung Smart TVs running Tizen and available on Galaxy phones, tablets and the web. It offers hundreds of linear channels in the US plus on-demand titles, and earns money through advertising. The scenario: average daily watch time per active Samsung TV Plus viewer in the US has dropped 15% over the past two weeks. I'll work out what's driving the drop by ruling out external factors, understanding the viewing journey, breaking down the metric, forming hypotheses and validating them.

Framework overview

Clarify, rule out external factors, map the journey, decompose the metric, gather data, form hypotheses, find the root cause, then validate and resolve.

Step 1

Clarifying Questions (3 minutes)

  • Is the drop in watch time per viewer, or in total viewers too?

  • Why it matters: Fewer viewers points to discovery or access problems; less time per viewer points to content or experience.
  • Hypothetical answer: Daily active viewers are flat; watch time per viewer fell from about 82 to 70 minutes.
  • Impact: Focus on the in-session experience rather than reach.
  • Is it sudden or gradual, and is it US-only?

  • Why it matters: A sudden US-only drop suggests a release, a content or ad change in that market.
  • Hypothetical answer: It dropped sharply over three days, two weeks ago, US only.
  • Impact: Look for a specific change around that date.
  • Has anything shipped recently: Tizen firmware, a TV Plus app update, a new ad policy, or channel lineup changes?

  • Why it matters: Internal changes are the most common cause of sudden drops.
  • Hypothetical answer: A Tizen OS update rolled out to 2023–2025 TVs, and the ad team raised the ad-load cap on some channels.
  • Impact: Both are prime suspects.
  • Is the drop across all devices, or only TVs?

  • Hypothetical answer: Mostly on TVs; mobile is flat.
  • Impact: Points away from content and toward TV-specific experience.
