Product Management Product Strategy Question: Linear winning Fortune 500 engineering organizations from Jira

Introduction

Linear has won the AI-native and high-growth software segment: OpenAI, Cursor, Cognition, Harvey, and Ramp run on it, and Salesforce and Figma joined in 2026. Fortune 500 engineering organizations are a different fight. They typically run Jira Software (often Data Center or a large Cloud Enterprise tenant) with years of custom workflows, Jira Service Management, Confluence, Marketplace apps, and reporting built on JQL. The switching cost is not the tool; it is the process, compliance, and politics wrapped around it.

The question is how Linear wins these accounts without becoming another Jira. I'll clarify the goal, analyze the market, define a vision and roadmap, prioritize initiatives, plan execution, set metrics, and cover risks before giving a recommendation.

Core thesis

Linear will not win a Fortune 500 by out-configuring Jira. It wins by making agents productive on real engineering work, which Jira's sprawling custom data model makes hard, and by landing in one division and expanding with proof.

Step 1

Clarify the Strategic Goals (3-4 minutes)

  • Is the goal full replacement of Jira across an enterprise, or winning meaningful engineering divisions (for example 500 to 3,000 engineers) that coexist with Jira elsewhere?

Why it matters: Full replacement requires parity on service desk, compliance, and custom workflows; division wins require coexistence and sync. Expected answer: Division-level wins first, with a path to wall-to-wall. Impact on approach: Prioritize a two-way Jira sync and migration tooling over feature parity.

  • What is our current enterprise footprint? Do we have Enterprise plan customers above 1,000 seats, and what blocked the deals we lost?

Why it matters: Lost-deal reasons tell us whether the gap is product, security, or go-to-market. Expected answer: A handful of 1,000+ seat customers; losses cite custom workflows, reporting, data residency, and "Atlassian is already approved". Impact on approach: Address security and procurement friction before deep product changes.

  • How much sales and solutions capacity can we add? Linear has been largely self-serve and product-led.

Why it matters: Fortune 500 deals need security reviews, pilots, and executive sponsors. Expected answer: Growing a small enterprise team, but no Oracle-style field army. Impact on approach: Product must carry much of the migration and proof work.

Key assumptions: win divisions first, keep the opinionated product intact, and use the agent platform as the wedge.
